Local organisation Tackling Minds has been awarded a £19,800 grant from the National Lottery Community Fund, allowing it to expand its mental health support work using fishing as a therapeutic tool.
The funding, secured in February, will enable the group to help individuals facing mental health challenges, addiction recovery, disabilities, and social isolation.
Founded by David Lyons, Tackling Minds has pioneered the integration of fishing into mental health recovery plans.
The organisation made history as the first to have angling officially recognised by the NHS, allowing GPs to prescribe fishing as part of patients’ mental health care. This initiative provides participants with a peaceful, reflective environment to support their recovery and wellbeing.
David Lyons’ efforts have been widely recognised, earning him a Coronation Champion award from King Charles, chosen from over 5,000 nominees.
David was invited to Buckingham Palace, where he was honoured for his groundbreaking work in using fishing to improve mental health outcomes.
In addition, Tackling Minds has contributed to the first-ever peer-reviewed scientific research linking fishing to mental health improvements, which confirmed its benefits, such as reducing anxiety and boosting self-esteem.
Speaking about the grant, David Lyons said: “We are incredibly grateful to the National Lottery Community Fund for their continued support. This funding allows us to extend our reach, helping more people experience the mental health benefits of fishing.”
Tackling Minds organises accessible, inclusive fishing sessions across Greater Manchester, benefiting hundreds of participants to date.
