Rochdale-born windsurfer John McLawrence, who began on Hollingworth Lake, was crowned Masters British Champion 2024 after a stunning victory at Scotland’s Tiree Wave Classic in October.
The active 50-year-old, who attended Lowerplace Primary School and Balderstone School, first discovered windsurfing at the age of 25 when his brother Paul introduced him to the sport.
Originally a rugby league player for local teams, John quickly became passionate about windsurfing, honing his skills at locations like Rhosneigr and Fleetwood.
At 40, he joined the Masters Fleet in the British Wave Sailing Championships, with 2024 marking a standout year: third at Rhosneigr and first at Tiree, earning him the overall British wave title.
Ranked 11th globally by the IWT Masters, John now aims to enter the world’s top 10. His wife Liz supports his journey, proudly accompanying him as he represents Britain on the international stage.
