Paul Waugh, the Labour and Co-operative MP for Rochdale, has been appointed by Prime Minister Andy Burnham as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Education.

Paul said: “Being appointed a minister in the Department for Education is one of the proudest moments of my career, and it is a moment I want to share with the whole of Rochdale.

“I was born in Wardle, brought up on a council estate in Spotland and went to state schools here in Rochdale, including Oulder Hill. The teachers I had genuinely changed my life by showing me what was possible, and I have never forgotten it. Now I have the chance to help do the same for youngsters here and right across the country.

“For the first time in the constituency’s history, Rochdale has one of its own serving as a minister in a government department.

“This is the town that gave the world the co-operative movement, and its people have always known that we get further together than we ever do alone. That is the Rochdale spirit I will carry into this job every single day.”
