Andy Warhol masterpieces arrived in Rochdale, bringing one of the world’s most recognisable artists to the heart of the town through a special pop up exhibition housed within a specialist fine art transport vehicle parked directly on Rochdale Town Hall Square.

The exhibition gave local people the opportunity to experience Warhol’s bold and instantly recognisable imagery, encouraging visitors to look at everyday objects in a completely new way. An example of how great art can inspire, challenge and engage people of all ages.

The surprise display was part of the Rochdale’s Side by Side festival, a free, three-day community celebration featuring live performances, art workshops, food, and family games.

Ceri Lewis, Senior Curator of Artist Rooms at Tate and National Galleries of Scotland, explained the exhibition reflects the  Artist Rooms commitment to making outstanding modern and contemporary art accessible to everyone, not just those who travel to major national galleries.

She added: “Rochdale is full of energy. I especially love the murals, the Town Hall and the fact that all ages are participating. We have really enjoyed being part of the festival.”

Former mayor Janet Emsley summed up the importance of the exhibition, saying: “It is great to see national works of art coming to Rochdale.”
