Lovicks celebrates centenary of business in Rochdale

Independent furniture retailer Lovicks is celebrating 100 years of business this year. Much of what Lovicks offers is displayed over four floors at the large Yorkshire Street showroom, which also
has free car parking for customers.
Now one of Rochdale’s longest-established retailers, the Yorkshire Street store was launched in November
1919 by William Lovick, who used the demob money he received for his service in World War One. Director David Lovick said: “We try and maintain a marked presence as Rochdale’s number one
furniture store, offering value for money with a quality service to match.
The business is still family-owned, now into its fifth generation, and is still located at the premises where it all
began, employing eight members of staff. “Thank you to all our loyal customers for their support over the last 100 years of trading. We hope you will
continue to support us for the next 100.”
Expansion started in 1920 to a site just down the road at a charitable hospital dispensary on the corner of
Yorkshire Street and Elliott Street.
The store also expanded into several neighbouring stores in
1959, instantly recognisable as the store which stands today.

William’s son, Alan, joined the business in 1930, later taking over
the company after William’s death in 1939 from gas poisoning
that he had suffered during World War One.

Alan was joined 18 years later by his son, Bill, who became
managing director in 1970.

These days the store is run by Bill’s children, David and Helen,
who have been involved since the 1980s and are both directors.

Lovicks provides a range of furnishings for every room in the
home, from beds and headboards, frames and mattresses to
dining room furniture, upholstery and carpets, plus more.
