Summer 2022Broadfield Park

Broadfield Park, in Rochdale town centre, is of great historic interest and contains the statue of John Bright MP (John Bright was a national figure standing up for many progressive causes, like the need to reform Corn Laws).

Of considerable beauty and charm with significant views of the area, the park extends into the town centre. It is also a popular venue for various outdoor events.

The park - the oldest in the borough - contains a Victorian-style bandstand, bowling greens, and a play area for children.

The pond is stocked with water plants and divided to create two separate habitats. The walkway across the centre of the pond makes a great ‘pond dipping’ platform and an excellent viewpoint. It is a valuable watering hole for the park’s wildlife and birds, and it is possible to see the return of the dragonfly to the park and bats catching insects at night.

The surrounding area is managed as a wildflower meadow to act as a food source and shelter for all manner of insects, amphibians, mammals and birds.
