Autumn 2023Success for Hollingworth Lake Rowing Club at the European Championships
Two members of the Hollingworth Lake Rowing Club picked up four gold medals at the European Masters Regatta in Munich, Germany, over the summer.
Nigel Price, from Todmorden, and Keith Lawton, from Newhey, competed in both sweep and sculling events in the 65-70 age category.
In the quadruple sculls event, they combined with two Newark members, who they had been training with specifically for the event, and saw off German, Irish, Austrian and an international composite in their final to record the fastest time in the event.
Later in the regatta, the four combined with four rowers from Star Club in Bedford to win both the 60-65 and 65-70 gold medals.
Nigel said: “It did help to have two ex-Oxford Blues in the boat and the ex-GB captain.”
The 60-65 category eight clocked 46 strokes a minute off the start and quickly built a lead that they fought and managed to retain for the race.
Nigel completed his regatta with success in the singles sculls, winning the 65-70 category over Czech, GB, Italian, French and German finalists.
Over 2,250 rowers from 41 nations and six continents competed across 633 races in the event, which is held annually at the Olympic Regatta Centre in Oberschleißheim.
The Hollingworth Lake Rowing Club used the European Masters Regatta as a ‘springboard’ for the World Masters Championships that take place in South Africa from 21-24 September.
