Jennifer Harris has completed sixty years working for the library service, having first joined in 1966. She started at Milnrow Branch Library when she was 19, now 79 she is still employed part-time at Smithy Bridge Branch Library.

Her passion for the role is as strong today as it was when she first started, she said: “I have loved every minute, it does not feel like work, it has always been a pleasure.”

She has watched generations grow up, with many of today’s adult borrowers first joining the library as children.

Jennifer said: “All the borrowers are lovely, I know every one of them, and it is an honour to be part of their lives.”

Earlier this year, she was given a ‘Long Service Award’ at the Town Hall.

Another of the highlights of Jennifer’s remarkable career came on her 75th birthday, when Andy Burnham surprised her by calling in to enjoy tea and cake with staff and visitors.

Jennifer is also a dedicated fundraiser for The Christie, Prostate Cancer Research and Maggie’s.
